Project Aware: Whale Shark Project

Coral Diving takes part in the “Project Aware Whale Shark Project”. The Whale Shark can grow to 12 meters and is the world’s largest fish. Its population is dwindling in numbers – it is not yet listed as endangered but classed as vulnerable by the World Conversation Union. Whale Sharks are mainly slaughtered for its fins which are used to make shark fin soup – a highly prized delicacy in many countries.

So far we don’t know much about the life cycles and habitat of the Whale Shark. The “Project Aware Whale Shark Project” raises the awareness of what is known so far, teaches how to responsibly dive and snorkel close to Whale Sharks and collects more information and photos together with the participants. A photo website will help to have more new and accessible information available. This can be used to enforce official protection of the Whale Shark.

There are still many sightings of Whale Sharks in the Andaman Sea . Coral Diving wants to support the efforts to protect the Whale Shark and introduce this breathtaking fish to its guests by the “Whale Shark Awareness Specialty Course”. If you want to participate you will first learn all important information about the Whale Shark, why and how it should be protected as well as the photo website. Following you will do 2 dives or snorkel excursions to see the practical side of how to act responsibly when close to Whale Sharks.
